OVERVIEW: A certain sense of mystery always surround these juvenile events, particular now that both Victoria’s major futurity series come at year’s end. There’s no great point in being defeatist however, so here’s what we know. Only three horses can win this Sapling Stakes for the freshman fillies, KEAYANG BLUE JEANS (1), ELYSIAN JAY (2) and AUREUS (5). Much will depend upon the opinion Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin have of their two fillies, and early markets suggest that ELYSIAN JAY (2) as siter of Tough Tilly and Centenario is pretty highly rated by the camp. Despite this early move, the form analyst charged with the task of solving problems such as these didn’t witness anything from the trial of that aforementioned debutante to suggest she’s a walk-up world-beater and as a result it seems more likely that KEYANG BLUE JEANS (1) will lead from gate one with ELYSIAN JAY (2) trailing her in transit. Typically, given Emma and Clayton have two runners perfectly drawn at juvenile level, we’d call last drinks at that. Not tonight. Despite the awkward alley and the obstacles she faces, our top tip tonight is the Larajay Farm-prepared AUREUS (5). After starting her career in the Harbour City and tackling the Pink Bonnet at start number two, that exciting daughter of former star mare Siliqua produced an unthinkable performance at Maryborough first-up from a break. If she reproduces that effort, she’s the one to beat clear of the two Stewart fillies we’ve discussed above. Clear fourth pick on available evidence is SNOW HUNTER (7) who won well on debut and has trialled very encouragingly since her last start ‘failure’. EARLY SPEED: 1 (Likely Leader) + 2? + 4? + 4?
