OVERVIEW: Night one of the Vic Cup carnival has finally arrived and our first entrée on the menu is this relatively unique 2MW affair featuring two recent rivals in CAPTAIN PINS (7) and THE CHANCER (1). That duo – both Metrospective Black Bookers - met in both heat and final of the Rising Stars series where CAPTAIN PINS (7) was victorious on both occasions but just 7.1 aggregate metres separated the pair overall. Interestingly, another major player tonight, DIAMOND ECLIPSE (3) also contested the final of that series, narrowly beating THE CHANCER (1) home. But we digress. There’s little doubt the polemarking draw and short-course conditions will play heavily in The Chancer’s favour, so long as he leads or trails in transit. That being said, CAPTAIN PINS (7) is the superior animal and, critically, his gate seven draw shouldn’t prove deadly given that bloke’s versatility and his unbeaten record (2 from 2) when sitting parked in transit. For these reasons CAPTAIN PINS (7) gets the nod ahead of THE CHANCER (1) with lesser hopes going to OPERATIVE LINE (5) – particularly if he leads – DIAMOND ECLIPSE (3) – particularly if he crosses the polemarker early – and also Team Douglas stablemates MAGIC MIKE (6) and KOSIMO (4). EARLY SPEED: 1,3,5 + 6,7 RATINGS: 7/ 1/ 5/ 3/ 6/ 4/ 9/ 10/ 2/ 11
