OVERVIEW: With Rock N Roll Doo off in search of destiny across the Tasman and a couple of other heavy hitters that contested the Vic Cup taking short sabbaticals at present, tonight’s Geelong Pacing Cup is an amazingly even affair – which is exactly what we want. Early markets suggest that MACH DAN (1) will hold up from his polemarking draw; either that or punters believe he’ll trail and outs-sprint whoever assumes the front. Realistically, however, it probably won’t be anywhere near so cut and dried. Little separates the top handful of chances here, but the horse that profiles best is former Group 1 winner, TRIPLE EIGHT (2). Third-up from a break, off an excellent Vic Cup performance, the horse they call ‘Bart’ finally draws a gate where he can lob close enough to use his short, but electric turn of pace without spending petrol to get there. If he lobs the 1 by 1 trail in transit, watch for him to rattle ominously late in the piece. The same can be said for MAX DELIGHT (9) who, amazingly, seems to be racing in career-best form this prep without landing gates from which he can prevail. Tonight, he follows through behind TRIPLE EIGHT (2) and can also prove dangerous if he’s close enough when they hit top gear. Early favourite MACH DAN (1) is also a major winning hope, and generally excels over long tripos, though he has only had the one run back and that’s a cause for some concern if you’re taking the short odds early in betting. Beyond those big guns strong cases can also be made for TORRID SAINT (11) and WILLIE GO WEST (6) though the former horse could be a victim of circumstance if they don’t run along from his horror gate and the latter – despite some excellent off-pace efforts earlier this prep – still goes far better when he finds the front.
