Race comment
OVERVIEW: A wonderful race in it’s own right, the Group 2 Casey Classic also represents the final chance for open grade pacers to flaunt their wares before the final field is set for next week’s Hunter Cup. Sadly, for most of tonight’s contestants however, they’re pretty much like NIDA graduates auditioning against Robert De Niro – with EXPENSIVE EGO (9) representing Bob. Realistically, Belinda McCarthy’s budding megastar has been excellent at his past two starts in the ID Final and Ballarat Cup, but evidence suggests he’s even more effective over short and middle trips. Forget the draw, he’ll simply launch around these at some juncture, find the leading role and run the ragged henceforth. The only danger, both on class and on form, is local hero TRIPLE EIGHT (7). If only he owned the gate speed of other current topliners he’d be their genuine equal. Unfortunately, doesn’t. In a perfect world tonight, Greg Sugars would balance that bloke early then roll forward before EXPENSIVE EGO (9) got moving. If that materialised, we’d have a proper race on our hands. If not, TRIPLE EIGHT (7) is clear second pick but probably can’t win. The only other tiny blowout hope is WESTERN SONADOR (2) is he led, dictated early and ran like the win following his super Shepparton Cup effort while MAJOR ROLL (5) and LIKE A WILDFIRE (6) represent exotic options if that is your play.
